In the movie, "Stomp the Yard", DJ calls Grant a Pretender. That term resonates within whenever I observe phoniness on the part of people who portray themselves as "real". People who are obviously internally torn, insecure & undefined. So, they become carbon copies other’s ‘fantasy’ lives (of people they interact with or see in the media, etc), egotistical behaviors that purport humility, regurgitate hypocritical unproven statements, or take themselves way too seriously with imagined clout. This leads to that “cover up” of a pretender...people who are actually scared of their own souls & naked identity. It's evident in the way the speak about themselves, about others, if they are fanatical, envious, deceptive, short-fused and defensive.
Of course it's roots could be traced to experiences in childhood and adolescence, but you'd think that with age comes maturity and acceptance. Unfortunately this isn't the case. I'm reminded of a quote that says, "Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional".
How exhausting it has to be to put on a costume daily. Don't get me wrong. It's one thing to aspire to be a certain being and actively working toward it - educated, sincere, accurate, positive, respected, accomplished - but it's another thing to be an actor, wearing someone else's identity (parent's, friends, coworkers, mentors, entertainers, etc).
Shed the layers, look at yourself hard, and identify yourself. You can't hide from what you are. Make effore to gradually eliminate the negative and "accentuate the positive".
"If you're real and you know it clap your hands"!
